Is it safe to go to Cartagena?

Colombia as a whole has come a long way in terms of safety and stability. Cartagena is considered one of the safest cities in the country and is a big hub for international tourism. Our hotel and all additional events are being held in the Old City, which is guarded by the Colombian military police. As in any big city or when traveling abroad, keep an eye on your valuables and avoid crimes of opportunity such as going to unfamiliar destinations with people you don’t know.

What is Colombia’s currency and how do I get it?

Local currency is the Colombian peso (COP). The exchange rate is roughly 4:1, meaning $1 USD is equal to $4,000 COPs. You can order COPs through most major US banks and they will deliver the money straight to your house. We recommend this method because this provides the most favorable exchange rate.

Colombia also accepts all major US credit cards: AMEX, MasterCard, and VISA.

How do I get to Cartagena?

Rafael Nuñez International Airport is the city’s major airport. We will provide a dedicated shuttle service from the hotel for our guests, but if you require transportation we recommend the city’s official tourist taxis. These taxis are white SUVs with their license number printed on the side.

Depending on traffic, the hotel is approximately a 10-15 minute ride from the airport.

What is the time difference?

Since folks are coming from all over, be advised that the time zone in Cartagena, Colombia is GMT-5. This means that Colombia is 5 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (GMT); this time zone is commonly known as Eastern Standard Time (EST).
